Three of the four cost the same. That is the useful part: choosing correctly costs you nothing, and choosing by reputation costs you a year of using a serum that was designed for somebody else's skin.
Why This One Costs What It Does
L-ascorbic acid is the form of vitamin C with the strongest evidence behind it in skincare, and it is also unstable. It oxidizes in the bottle. SkinCeuticals exists because Dr. Sheldon Pinnell, then chief of dermatology at Duke University, spent his career on that exact problem. The Duke University antioxidant patent that came out of his research is licensed exclusively to the brand.

How to Tell If Yours Has Turned
Look at the color through the bottle. A fresh L-ascorbic acid serum is close to clear or a pale straw color. As it oxidizes it moves through yellow to orange to brown. By the time it is dark, it has lost its potency and it is not coming back.
Keep the cap on tight, keep it out of a sunny bathroom, and use it daily rather than saving it for special occasions. A serum you ration is a serum that goes off before it does anything for you.
