MedGlo offers physician-performed CO2 laser treatment in Mission Viejo, CA, with every procedure planned and performed personally by Dr. Violeta Recalde, MD. CO2 laser is an advanced ablative resurfacing treatment that smooths fine lines, evens out tone and texture, and softens the appearance of scars and sun damage — with results that build over the following weeks and months.

Because CO2 laser is one of the most powerful resurfacing tools available, the depth, settings, and recovery plan are tailored specifically to your skin. There are no nurse injectors or technicians at MedGlo — Dr. Recalde is a board-certified physician with over 20 years of medical experience and oversees every step from consultation through healing.

What is CO2 Laser?

A CO2 laser uses precise wavelengths of light to remove damaged outer layers of skin while gently heating the deeper layers. This dual action stimulates new collagen production and triggers fresh, healthier skin to grow in — leading to smoother texture, more even tone, and a noticeably firmer appearance.

Unlike non-ablative treatments such as Laser Genesis or pigment-focused treatments like PICO Laser, CO2 laser delivers measurable resurfacing in fewer sessions — at the cost of a real recovery period. Dr. Recalde will help you choose the right modality (or combination) for your concerns.

Pre-Treatment Preparation

To give you the safest treatment and the best possible results, please follow these steps in the weeks and days leading up to your appointment. If anything is unclear, our team is happy to help.

2–4 Weeks Before — Protect & Prepare Your Skin

Avoid excessive sun exposure and tanning, including tanning beds.

Apply a broad-spectrum sunscreen (SPF 30 or higher) every day, and discontinue all self-tanning products.

Tell Dr. Recalde about any history of cold sores (herpes simplex) — preventive medication may be prescribed.

Let the MedGlo team know about any recent cosmetic treatments, surgeries, or changes to your medical history.

1 Week Before — Pause Hair Removal

Do not wax, thread, bleach, or use depilatory creams on the treatment area.

72 Hours Before — Simplify Your Skincare

Unless otherwise directed by Dr. Recalde:

Stop using retinoids and retinol (Retin-A®, tretinoin, adapalene, tazarotene, and other vitamin A derivatives).

Avoid glycolic acid, salicylic acid, exfoliating scrubs, and other potentially irritating skincare products.

48 Hours Before — Rest & Hydrate

Avoid alcohol, stay well hydrated, and minimize strenuous exercise that may irritate the treatment area.

If prescribed antiviral or other preventive medications, begin taking them exactly as instructed.

Day of Treatment — Arrive Ready

Arrive with clean skin — free of makeup, lotion, sunscreen, perfume, or deodorant on the treatment area.

Wear comfortable clothing, eat a light meal, and drink plenty of water unless instructed otherwise.

Bring a wide-brimmed hat if your face will be treated.

Plan for transportation if sedation or driving-impairing medications will be used.

Important Medical Information

Please inform Dr. Recalde and the MedGlo team if you:

Are pregnant or breastfeeding.

Have active infections, cold sores, rashes, or open wounds in the treatment area.

Have a history of keloid scarring or poor wound healing.

Are taking blood thinners, isotretinoin (Accutane®), or immunosuppressive medications.

Have recently undergone facial procedures or surgery.

What to Expect

Following your CO2 laser treatment, redness, swelling, warmth, and a sunburn-like sensation are normal and expected. Most patients experience peeling and pinkness for roughly 1 to 2 weeks depending on treatment depth. Final results continue to build for several months as new collagen forms.

Dr. Recalde and the MedGlo team will provide detailed post-treatment instructions to support proper healing and help you achieve the best possible results — including sun protection, gentle cleansing, and the right moisturizers to use during recovery.

Frequently Asked Questions

What does CO2 laser treat? +
CO2 laser is used to resurface skin and improve the appearance of fine lines and wrinkles, sun damage and age spots, uneven texture, acne and surgical scars, and laxity around the eyes. Dr. Recalde will recommend the right depth and area during your consultation.
Is CO2 laser the same as Laser Genesis or PICO laser? +
No. Laser Genesis is a gentle, non-ablative treatment for redness, fine lines, and texture with no downtime. PICO laser targets pigmentation (sun spots, melasma). CO2 laser is ablative — it precisely removes the top layer of skin to trigger deeper collagen remodeling, with stronger results and a real recovery period.
How many sessions will I need? +
Many patients see significant improvement after a single CO2 laser session. Some concerns — like deep scars or extensive sun damage — benefit from a series. Dr. Recalde will outline a realistic plan at your consultation.
How long is the recovery from CO2 laser? +
Expect redness, swelling, warmth, and a sunburn-like sensation for several days, with peeling and pinkness for roughly 1 to 2 weeks depending on treatment depth. Dr. Recalde provides detailed post-treatment instructions to support healing.
Does CO2 laser hurt? +
Topical numbing is applied before treatment to keep you comfortable. Most patients describe a warm or prickling sensation rather than pain. Deeper treatments may use additional pain management.
Am I a candidate for CO2 laser? +
Most adults with sun damage, fine lines, scars, or uneven texture are candidates. CO2 laser is not appropriate during pregnancy or breastfeeding, with active infections in the area, recent isotretinoin (Accutane) use, or certain medical conditions. Dr. Recalde reviews your full medical history before recommending treatment.
