Hyaluronic Acid Fillers: What They Are and How They Work

By Dr. Violeta Recalde, MD

As we age, our faces lose volume. The fat pads that give youthful faces their fullness gradually diminish. Bone structure subtly changes. Collagen production slows. The result: hollows under the eyes, flattened cheeks, deepening lines around the nose and mouth, and thinner lips. Hyaluronic acid (HA) dermal fillers address this volume loss directly.

What Is Hyaluronic Acid?

Hyaluronic acid is a naturally occurring substance in your body. It's found in your skin, joints, and connective tissue, where it acts as a moisture magnet — each HA molecule can hold up to 1,000 times its weight in water. This is why your skin looks plump and hydrated when you're young: it's full of hyaluronic acid.

Injectable HA fillers use a cross-linked, gel form of hyaluronic acid that mimics what your body produces naturally. When injected beneath the skin, they restore volume, smooth wrinkles, and enhance contours — with results that look and feel natural.

Where Fillers Are Used

  • Under-eye hollows — reduces dark circles and tired appearance
  • Cheeks — restores midface volume and lift
  • Nasolabial folds — softens the lines from nose to mouth
  • Lips — adds volume, definition, and symmetry
  • Jawline and chin — sharpens definition and improves profile
  • Temples — fills hollow temples that contribute to an aged look

Why Physician Injectors Matter

Filler injections are among the most technique-dependent aesthetic procedures. The difference between natural-looking results and an overdone appearance often comes down to the injector's understanding of facial anatomy, their sense of proportion, and their willingness to use restraint.

At MedGlo, I perform every filler injection myself. I trained in medicine for over two decades before entering aesthetics, and I bring that medical foundation to every treatment. I prefer a conservative approach — enhancing what's there rather than creating something artificial. The goal is for people to notice that you look refreshed, not that you've had work done.

Safety and Reversibility

One of the great advantages of hyaluronic acid fillers is that they're reversible. If you're unhappy with the result, or if a complication occurs, the filler can be dissolved with an enzyme called hyaluronidase. This safety net is another reason HA fillers are the most widely used dermal filler category worldwide.

Results typically last 6 to 18 months depending on the product used and the treatment area. Learn more about our dermal filler treatments or schedule a consultation.
