Medical Weight Loss vs. Fad Diets: Know the Facts

By Dr. Violeta Recalde, MD

Every year, a new diet trend promises fast, effortless weight loss. Juice cleanses, keto, intermittent fasting, meal replacement shakes — the list changes, but the pattern stays the same. Initial results, followed by a plateau, followed by regaining the weight. If you've been through this cycle, you're not alone, and it's not a failure of willpower. It's a failure of approach.

Why Fad Diets Don't Work Long-Term

Most fad diets rely on severe caloric restriction or the elimination of entire food groups. This can produce rapid weight loss in the first few weeks, but it comes at a cost. Your metabolism adapts. Your body enters a conservation mode, burning fewer calories at rest. Hunger hormones increase. And when you eventually return to normal eating — because extreme restriction is unsustainable — the weight returns, often with extra pounds.

This isn't a theory. It's well-documented in medical literature. The problem with fad diets isn't that people lack discipline — it's that these diets work against your body's biology rather than with it.

What Medical Weight Loss Actually Means

Medical weight loss is a physician-supervised approach that uses evidence-based strategies to help you lose weight safely and sustainably. This may include prescription medications, lab monitoring, nutritional guidance, and regular check-ins with your doctor.

One of the most significant developments in medical weight loss is the emergence of GLP-1 receptor agonists like semaglutide (the active ingredient in medications like Ozempic and Wegovy). These medications work by mimicking a hormone your body naturally produces, helping to regulate appetite, slow gastric emptying, and improve insulin sensitivity.

Why Medical Supervision Matters

GLP-1 medications are powerful tools, but they are medical treatments — not supplements. They require proper dosing, monitoring for side effects, and regular follow-up. At MedGlo, I evaluate every weight loss patient personally, reviewing their medical history, current medications, and health goals before prescribing anything.

This matters because weight loss is not one-size-fits-all. Some patients respond well to semaglutide; others may benefit from a different approach. A physician who knows your full health picture can guide you toward the option that's safest and most effective for you specifically.

The MedGlo Approach to Weight Loss

At our Mission Viejo practice, medical weight loss is treated as a medical matter — because it is one. You'll work directly with me throughout your journey. We'll track your progress, adjust your treatment as needed, and make sure you're losing weight in a way that supports your overall health, not just the number on the scale.

If you've been caught in the diet cycle and want a more sustainable path forward, a conversation with a physician is a good place to start.
