How RF Microneedling Can Improve the Appearance of Acne Scars
Acne scars can persist for years — or decades — after active breakouts have resolved. They're notoriously difficult to treat because the damage extends below the skin's surface, into the dermis where collagen has been disrupted. Topical products alone can't reach deep enough to make a meaningful difference. That's where RF microneedling comes in.
How RF Microneedling Works on Scars
RF (radiofrequency) microneedling combines two proven technologies. Ultra-fine needles create controlled micro-injuries in the skin at precise depths, while radiofrequency energy delivers heat to the deeper dermal layers. This dual mechanism triggers a robust wound-healing response: your body produces new collagen and elastin to repair the controlled damage, gradually filling in and smoothing out depressed scars.
The key advantage of adding radiofrequency to microneedling is depth. Standard microneedling works at the surface level. RF microneedling reaches the dermal layers where scar tissue actually resides, making it significantly more effective for textured acne scars like rolling scars, boxcar scars, and shallow ice pick scars.
What Types of Acne Scars Respond Best
- —Rolling scars — broad depressions with smooth, sloping edges. Excellent response to RF microneedling.
- —Boxcar scars — wider depressions with defined edges. Good to excellent response, especially with multiple sessions.
- —Shallow ice pick scars — narrow, deep pits. Moderate improvement; deep ice pick scars may need complementary treatments.
- —Post-inflammatory hyperpigmentation — dark marks left after acne. Responds well, especially when combined with proper skincare.
Realistic Expectations
I believe in setting honest expectations. RF microneedling can significantly improve acne scarring — most patients see 40–70% improvement over a series of treatments. It won't make scars completely invisible, but it can make them far less noticeable, smoothing the skin's texture to a point where scars no longer define your complexion.
Most patients need 3 to 4 sessions spaced 4 to 6 weeks apart. Collagen remodeling continues for months after each session, so the full results develop gradually over 3 to 6 months following your final treatment.
Why Provider Selection Matters
The effectiveness of RF microneedling depends heavily on the provider's skill in selecting the right needle depth, energy settings, and treatment pattern for your specific scar type and skin tone. Settings that work beautifully for one patient can cause problems for another. This is why I perform every microneedling treatment at MedGlo personally — adjusting parameters in real time based on how your skin responds.
